The milestone unit went to a fulfilment centre in Japan. Alongside the announcement, Amazon introduced DeepFleet, an AI foundation model for coordinating warehouse robot movements, which it said would improve fleet travel efficiency by 10%. That figure concerns robot travel, rather than a uniform improvement across every warehouse process. DeepFleet uses inventory-movement data and AWS tools, including Amazon SageMaker, to plan routes and reduce congestion between robots. It addresses the movement of existing machines through fulfilment centres, adding a coordination layer to the hardware used to move stock and customer orders. Amazon began deploying shelf-moving robots in 2012 and now operates several types of mobile system. Hercules transports inventory, Pegasus handles individual packages using conveyor belts, and Proteus moves carts through spaces shared with employees. The million-robot milestone covers that wider fleet. Amazon manufactures its robots in the United States and deploys them internationally.
