Kardex said on May 19, 2025 that Alfa Laval selected it to deliver an AutoStore system for a new 324,000-square-foot distribution center in Indianapolis. The project is built around spare-parts fulfillment, which gives the automation a different operating profile from high-volume ecommerce picking.
Spare-parts logistics depends on service reliability. A warehouse may need to handle urgent outbound orders, long-tail SKUs, lot traceability, first-in-first-out or first-expired-first-out rules, and service expectations tied to installed equipment in the field. Kardex says the system is designed for up to 350 bin presentations per hour and includes a 15-year support agreement.
That support horizon is a useful signal. Alfa Laval is designing automation into a distribution center that has to serve customers over years of parts demand, inventory change, and maintenance cycles. The question is whether AutoStore can support high availability in an aftersales environment where the cost of a missed part can move beyond warehouse labor.
Kardex became a global AutoStore partner in 2021 and says it has delivered more than 80 AutoStore projects across 18 countries with more than 200 specialists. The Alfa Laval project fits that strategy: Kardex supplies the integration and service layer around an AutoStore cube rather than only selling storage equipment.
The competitive field includes Swisslog, Dematic, Bastian Solutions, Fortna, Element Logic, AutoStore's broader partner network, and vertical-lift or shuttle systems sold into spare-parts distribution. Kardex's distinction is combining AutoStore integration with a service model aimed at long-running industrial distribution operations.
The proof boundary is operational. Public material does not disclose live order throughput, service-level performance, urgent-order response time, error rates, uptime, or labor productivity after the Indianapolis system goes into production.
If Kardex turns AutoStore into reliable spare-parts infrastructure for Alfa Laval, the project strengthens its position in aftersales logistics rather than generic warehouse automation. The strategic value is a system that can keep industrial service networks supplied without forcing customers into a full custom automation rebuild every time demand changes.
