The planned investment combines an anticipated equity stake in Aeva, non-dilutive product-development funding and capital spending to establish production capacity. It is a package of different commitments, rather than a disclosed US$50 million equity round. The initial manufacturing programme covers Aeva’s Atlas Ultra 4D LiDAR, including a previously announced development programme with a top-ten global passenger-vehicle manufacturer. Aeva’s frequency-modulated continuous-wave technology measures distance and radial velocity. Its sensing platform combines a LiDAR-on-chip sensor, a custom processing system-on-chip and perception software with LG Innotek’s electronics manufacturing capabilities. The companies also plan to develop sensing products for indoor and outdoor industrial equipment and pursue robotics applications. Additional opportunities under consideration include smartphones, tablets, augmented- and virtual-reality devices, smart appliances and home robots. These are development areas within the collaboration; the July announcement does not identify specific robot customers or orders.
