ABB reopens expanded Michigan robotics factory following $20M refit

ABB opened its refitted US robotics headquarters and manufacturing facility in Auburn Hills, Michigan, on 13 March 2024. The $20 million investment increased facility space by 30% and was expected to create 72 skilled jobs, supported by a $450,000 performance-based Michigan Business Development Program grant.

The site develops and manufactures industrial robotics for US and wider Americas customers, with applications spanning packaging and logistics, food and beverages, construction, healthcare and electric-vehicle production. A new Customer Experience Center supports application development and demonstrations of robotic hardware, software and AI-enabled automation.

The expanded training centre is intended to educate more than 3,000 workers and students each year, including people entering robotics without previous experience or a degree. ABB originally opened the Auburn Hills manufacturing operation in 2015.

The refit forms part of more than $30 million invested in ABB’s US robotics operations since 2019, across four locations. Its regional network includes packaging and logistics in Atlanta, life-sciences and healthcare research in Houston, and AI research in San Jose. The $20 million Michigan project is one component of that wider investment.
