DoorDash unveils in-house drone delivery system for local commerce
DoorDash Air combines a custom aircraft with restaurant handoffs and delivery orchestration, with Northern California pilots planned.
DoorDash has unveiled DoorDash Air, an autonomous drone delivery system combining a purpose-designed aircraft, ground infrastructure and software orchestration. Initial pilot deliveries are planned in Northern California, with Chipotle, Popeyes and local restaurant Momo N Curry among the first partners.
Developed in-house by DoorDash Labs, the system integrates with the company's existing local-commerce network. DoorDash says it designed the ground infrastructure around how restaurants already operate, combining merchant loading systems, packaging, kitchen handoffs and order data so businesses can add drone delivery to their existing workflows.
The aircraft uses six slow-spinning propellers and a winch for pickup and delivery. DoorDash's analysis of historical order data indicates that around 80% of typical restaurant orders are small and light enough for the aircraft. That estimate covers a limited sample of U.S. deliveries; actual eligibility also depends on weather, flight range and routing conditions.
DoorDash says initial tests produced average restaurant-to-door delivery times of under five minutes, based on a limited sample of deliveries by distance and size. The aircraft runs on the company's Autonomous Delivery Platform, which coordinates Dashers, Dot robots and other autonomous delivery partners. It selects a delivery mode for each order using distance, weight, order contents, kitchen preparation and delivery timing.
The unveiling follows DoorDash receiving FAA Part 135 air-carrier certification in July 2026, authorising it to commercially operate its own drone delivery service in the United States. DoorDash said at the time that the aircraft and operating system had been developed internally through DoorDash Labs.
DoorDash says it has completed hundreds of thousands of autonomous deliveries across Dot and its external robot and drone partners. DoorDash Air adds an internally developed aerial platform to the network, with the delivery modes coordinated through the same software layer.
