Komatsu and AIM bring autonomous bulldozers and excavators into commercial jobsites

Komatsu and its EARTHBRAIN subsidiary announced a strategic partnership with AIM Intelligent Machines on 31 July 2026, confirming that autonomous bulldozers and hydraulic excavators were already operating at US customer jobsites. The companies plan to introduce the solution in Japan from 2027, following joint technology validation and business development.

The system connects construction plans and target terrain data generated through Smart Construction with AIM’s autonomy platform. Machines use those objectives to determine working methods and travel routes, execute earthmoving tasks and feed progress information back into the digital workflow. AIM’s equipment can be retrofitted to existing bulldozers and excavators, allowing operators to introduce autonomy without replacing their current fleets.

Smart Construction already connects jobsite planning, digitally enabled equipment, progress management and remote operation. The AIM integration extends that workflow into machine execution: design and terrain information become inputs to the equipment performing the work, while operating data supports subsequent planning and performance review. Komatsu and EARTHBRAIN will continue integrating their construction-management tools with AIM’s platform as the commercial programme expands.

AIM had disclosed US$50 million in funding in June 2025, with investors including Khosla Ventures, General Catalyst, Human Capital, Ironspring Ventures, Mantis and DCVC. Its earlier platform announcement described retrofit systems for mixed fleets across construction, mining and government works, including equipment from different manufacturers and of different ages.
