Mitsubishi Electric develops humanoid CNC machining coordination system

Mitsubishi Electric has developed a machining coordination system that links a humanoid robot with a computer numerical control machine tool through physical AI. The company plans to demonstrate it at JIMTOF in Tokyo from 26 October, covering work such as setup, cleaning, finished-part removal, transport, inspection and troubleshooting.

The architecture combines a machining task planner, a CNC machine with embedded physical AI and a general-purpose humanoid. An operator gives basic work instructions in natural language. The planner interprets them, generates machining tasks, assigns work and coordinates the machine and robot as they exchange operational information.

Mitsubishi Electric developed the planner and CNC intelligence using its Maisart AI technology. The coordination layer addresses the communication functions and control sequences normally developed separately to connect each robot with a machine tool. It is designed to support automated machining and associated handling from higher-level instructions.

Setup and cleaning require a robot to reach into a machine’s working area, manipulate parts or tools and respond to the machine’s state. Mitsubishi Electric is developing humanoid coordination around these operator tasks as manufacturers seek to automate existing machining environments with less production-line modification. The announced system will be shown as a development demonstration at the trade fair.
