Stryker agrees $400M investment and US Versius sales alliance with CMR Surgical

Cambridge-based surgical robotics developer CMR Surgical has agreed an approximately $400 million (£300 million) preferred-equity investment from Stryker, alongside an exclusive US commercial agency agreement for its Versius robotic surgery portfolio. Announced on 12 October, the proposed investment would fund product development and international expansion, while Stryker would become the exclusive US sales agent. The transaction also grants Stryker an exclusive option to acquire the remainder of CMR at a later date; no full acquisition has been agreed, and the initial investment remains subject to regulatory approval and closing conditions.

Founded in 2014, CMR developed Versius for minimally invasive soft-tissue procedures using a modular architecture designed to fit different operating-room layouts. Its second-generation Versius Plus extends that platform, while CMR retains responsibility for product development and commercialisation outside the United States. Stryker brings existing hospital relationships, sales infrastructure and complementary endoscopy and surgical technology businesses, entering an area of robotics where established installed systems and clinical training requirements affect adoption.

The agreement provides CMR with a US distribution partner while preserving its separately operated international business for now. Neither company disclosed how many additional Versius systems the alliance is expected to place or a timetable for exercising the acquisition option.
