Universal Robots launches Gen 7 for AI-ready cobots

The redesigned platform adds new arms, a more integrated tool flange and the compute and software layers Universal Robots is positioning for industrial AI.

Universal Robots launched Gen 7 on Sept. 14 at IMTS 2026 in Chicago, introducing its seventh-generation cobot platform with a redesigned controller, tool flange, teach pendant and software stack aimed at industrial AI applications.

The platform adds three g-Series arms — the UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300 and UR18g-950 — named for their payload and reach. The new tool flange carries power, data and safety directly to cameras, sensors and higher-power end effectors, reducing external cabling and integration hardware. Built-in force-torque sensing, impedance control and real-time data exchange are intended to support contact-rich applications including dexterous manipulation and force-sensitive assembly.

Gen 7 also introduces the CB7 controller, which Universal Robots says provides 40% more compute in a 30% smaller footprint than the previous generation. It supports industrial networks and direct connections to PLCs, HMIs, vision systems and external compute, while remaining compatible with existing e-Series and UR Series arms.

The software layer is built around PolyScope X, with ROS 2 communication and open APIs for edge-AI applications using external processors. A new TP7 teach pendant is more than 20% lighter, while the SP7 Smart Panel adds point-of-task controls at the tool flange.

The launch follows Universal Robots’ recent work on data and models for physical AI. In March, the company introduced the UR AI Trainer with Scale AI, a leader-follower system for capturing synchronized motion, force and vision data on production-grade robots. The same announcement included a demonstration of Generalist AI’s robotic foundation model on two UR robots.

Universal Robots says it has sold more than 100,000 cobots worldwide. That installed base predates Gen 7 but gives the new platform an existing ecosystem of integrators, software partners and industrial users.
