Bandelin automates sandblasting using Nordbo Mimic and Universal Robots

German ultrasonic-cleaning-equipment producer Bandelin used Nordbo Robotics' Mimic demonstration-based programming technology to automate sandblasting in a case study published 20 September 2025. Integrator Adolf Neuendorff combined a Universal Robots collaborative arm with Nordbo's Mimic kit, allowing technicians to demonstrate tool distance, angle and coverage and convert those motions into repeatable robot programmes.

Sandblasting requires control of tool distance, angle and surface coverage. Bandelin makes multiple models of ultrasonic baths, so the finishing programme needs to change with the workpiece. Demonstration-based teaching captures the technician’s process knowledge and allows new part paths to be recorded without writing each robot motion manually.

Bandelin’s motivations included the physical demands of blasting, uncomfortable protective clothing and difficulty retaining staff for the role. Nordbo reports more repeatable finishing and quicker adaptation to different models after automation, with experienced workers able to contribute to teaching rather than perform the entire abrasive process manually. The September date is the case study’s publication date; it does not establish when the cell was commissioned.
