Five Moves

1. Robot-brain funding became the capital story

Generalist AI closed $400 million at a $2 billion valuation, the week's largest embodied-AI round. Radical Ventures led; 8VC, Union Square Ventures, Hanabi Capital, Norwest, NVIDIA NVentures, Bezos Expeditions, and Spark Capital participated. New angels include Fei-Fei Li, Bin Lin, and Naval Ravikant. Total funding exceeds $500 million. CEO Pete Florence, formerly Google DeepMind, and chief scientist Andy Zeng give the round technical credibility; GEN-1, launched April 2026, claimed 99% reliability on diverse tasks and 3x faster execution than prior state of the art.

Spirit AI's concurrent RMB 1.5 billion, roughly $220 million, Series A+ reinforces the same pattern from the Chinese side. The two companies are different bets: Generalist builds hardware-agnostic foundation models; Spirit AI builds embodied intelligence around VLA models, real-world interaction data, and industrial deployment pathways. Spirit AI v1.6 also topped RoboArena at 1,924, ahead of Nvidia Cosmos3-Nano-Policy at 1,881, though benchmark positions at this level move quickly.

2. Counter-drone robotics got the week's clearest procurement signal

Allen Control Systems closed a $200 million Series B at a $2.2 billion post-money valuation to scale Bullfrog. Smash Capital led; Craft Ventures, Rally Ventures, and Inspired Capital participated. ACS says it has more than $120 million in U.S. government contracts for Bullfrog variants. The system mounts onto existing weapons including the M240 machine gun and uses AI and computer vision to detect, track, and engage drones.

CEO Mike Wior's procurement argument: bullets are widely available; interceptor missiles are scarce and expensive. The round is expansion capital behind a system already positioned for military deployment.

3. Warehouse autonomy moved toward broader floor work

Amazon unveiled next-generation Proteus at its Delivering the Future event in Dartford on June 4. Current Proteus moves carts up to 400kg but operates only in dock areas at 25 U.S. sites. The new version works across warehouse floors, responds to conversational prompts, and determines task priority, route, and timing autonomously. European rollout is planned for H1 2027. Amazon also highlighted STARK for 15 European sites by 2027 and Vulcan, its first robot with a sense of touch, already running in Hamburg. The announcements sit inside Amazon's 10 billion euro European fulfillment investment.

4. Components carried the quieter stack signal

Westmag emerged from stealth with $11 million in seed funding led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Founders Fund, Lux Capital, NFDG, and Menlo Ventures. The South San Francisco company is building domestic manufacturing capacity for drone motors and robot actuators: drones need four or more electric motors, humanoids need more than 20 actuators, and China currently holds most of that global production. Westmag is also investing upstream into stator steel stamping and rare-earth magnet finishing to get further into the supply chain.

5. Schaeffler's humanoid position keeps widening

Schaeffler and Spirit AI signed a strategic cooperation agreement on June 3 covering embodied-AI data collection, humanoid core components, and industrial applications. The data loop is the useful part: Schaeffler provides real manufacturing scenarios; Spirit AI uses that interaction data to improve industrial embodied models.

Schaeffler has been moving across the humanoid ecosystem well before this deal. The company is reportedly active across roughly 45 humanoid collaborations. Public agreements include Humanoid's planned deployment of 1,000 to 2,000 robots across Schaeffler manufacturing sites by 2032, also covered in Humanoid's own release, and Hexagon's plan to deploy at least 1,000 AEON humanoids across Schaeffler's global factory network. The public ones are mapped below:

Research Notable

Spirit v1.6 / RoboArena

Spirit AI's embodied-intelligence model topped RoboArena with a score of 1,924, edging Nvidia's Cosmos3-Nano-Policy at 1,881, and SCMP reported it as the first Chinese model to lead the benchmark. Frame this as benchmark position only, not deployment proof.

VLA-REPLICA

VLA-REPLICA is a reproducibility fix for real-world VLA evaluation: a full benchmark setup built from off-the-shelf hardware, with a task suite and protocols that independent labs can actually replicate. The value is structural: cheap, consistent evaluation infrastructure rather than a model result.

MotionDisco

MotionDisco discovers contact-rich, long-horizon humanoid loco-manipulation behaviours via LLM-guided evolutionary search, without teleoperation or human-motion retargeting, and transfers to a real humanoid. The no-retargeting approach is the architectural claim; real-hardware transfer is what gives it weight. See the project page.

GRAIL

GRAIL is Nvidia Research's fully digital pipeline for generating humanoid loco-manipulation training data from 3D assets and video foundation model priors: no physical setup, no teleoperation. Trained entirely on synthetic data, policies transferred to a Unitree G1 with 84% success on object pick-up and 90% on stair-climbing. The code and dataset are public.

Humanoid-GPT

Humanoid-GPT is a CVPR 2026 humanoid motion-tracking system from Tsinghua University and Galbot built around a GPT-style Transformer trained on a 2 billion-frame motion corpus, about 20x the scale of the strongest prior generalist tracker. The paper reports clear scaling laws: larger motion corpora and larger models produce consistent gains, with zero-shot generalization to unseen motions including digging, soccer and dance on a Unitree G1.

Capital & Platform Watch

Agile Robots and the German Physical AI Wave

Reports of an $800 million Agile Robots round, with SoftBank in early talks to contribute more than $300 million, sit at the center of a wider German physical AI capital surge.

Agile spun out of the German Aerospace Center, generated roughly EUR 200 million in 2024 revenue, employs thousands across Germany, China, and India, and has added industrial depth through the Franka Emika and Bar Automation acquisitions. A SoftBank return here is exposure to a company with deployed production automation, medical robotics customers, and a bipedal platform in development.

That base distinguishes the Agile round from several German capital tracks moving simultaneously:

NEURA Robotics - cognitive humanoids / factory robotics — Mar 2026 — ~EUR 1B / ~$1.1B. Valuation: ~EUR 4B. Context: reported March raise; investors include Tether, Amazon/Prime Capital, Qualcomm Ventures, Bosch and Schaeffler.

Helsing - defense AI / autonomous systems — May 2026 — ~$1.2B. Valuation: ~$18B. Context: reported advanced raise following prior ~EUR 600M round; spans AI defense software, drones and autonomous underwater systems.

Agile Robots - industrial manipulation / medical robotics — Jun 2026 — ~$800M. Valuation: TBD. Context: reported talks, with SoftBank discussing $300M+; Agile also has the Agile ONE bipedal platform.

Stark - strike drones / military autonomy — May 2026 — at least EUR 300M. Valuation: ~EUR 2.5B. Context: reported capital search by a young German defense-drone company after crossing unicorn territory.

UBTech: Consumer Humanoid Demand Outside the Factory

UBTech's UWORLD companion robot passed 1,000 preorders in three days on JD.com, with buyers committing RMB 3,000 deposits, roughly $440, per unit. Real deposits on a full-size biomimetic humanoid are the clearest near-term demand signal for consumer humanoids outside industrial settings seen this year, even if long-run economics remain unproven.
