About XACT Robotics
XACT Robotics built ACE around a patient-mounted mechanism for inserting and steering instruments. A physician selects the entry point, target and obstacles in planning software, then uses CT images at procedural checkpoints to assess progress. Its S-Drive technology adjusts the trajectory, including non-linear paths, to account for tissue or target movement.
The robot attaches directly to the patient and incorporates its registration element, allowing it to move with the patient's body. The clinician retains procedural decisions and can complete the intervention with the robot attached or removed. XACT's development led to cleared products, but the company shut down in September 2023, as reported by Globes and recorded by Startup Nation Central.

Events
- 2022-10-04 - Regulatory - FDA clears XACT ACE Xtend remote control unit
The clearance permits robotic instrument insertion and steering from an interventional-radiology control room. ACE Xtend is designed to reduce staff radiation exposure and physical strain while improving workflow. The remote-control unit operates with the FDA-cleared XACT ACE system for CT-guided percutaneous procedures.

Lahey became the first U.S. hospital to offer robotic percutaneous radiology procedures with the system. The XACT ACE system combines image-based planning and navigation with robotic instrument insertion and steering. Lahey had also participated in clinical research that supported the system's FDA approval.

Notes
Profile notes
- XACT Robotics shut down after regulatory clearance but before clearance translated into a sustainable commercial business
reviewed 2026-07-20 - XACT Robotics obtained clearance for its image-guided needle-steering system and began sales, then closed in September 2023 and laid off its workforce. Reporting at the time said the company had failed to generate significant revenue despite its regulatory and technical milestones. Clearance established that the system could be marketed; it did not establish adoption, continuing support or company survival.
