About
About Terrafarm
Terrafarm develops agricultural robots and controlled-environment cultivation technology in Japan. Its current research combines plant physiology with automation, using plant-factory environments to control light, carbon dioxide, temperature and humidity. The company works with the University of Tokyo on photosynthesis and with Chiba University on agricultural robotics and cultivation experiments.
Its engineering team designs robots in-house and tests developing systems at university facilities and with farmers. These terrestrial programmes address labour constraints and crop productivity while building technology for a longer-term space-agriculture goal. The proposed modular plant factory combines environmental control, robotic operation and circulation of water, air and nutrients for isolated settings. Terrafarm was established in November 2025 and is headquartered in Tokyo; operating food-production systems in spacecraft or planetary habitats remains a future application.
