Jotun manufactures decorative, protective, marine and powder coatings for buildings, infrastructure, ships and industrial assets. Its maritime technology portfolio includes Hull Skating Solutions, a service that combines antifouling coatings, vessel-performance monitoring, underwater inspection and proactive cleaning performed by the onboard HullSkater robot.
Founded in Sandefjord, Norway, in 1926, Jotun remains headquartered there and operates internationally through factories, sales companies and research facilities. The company launched Hull Skating Solutions in 2020. Shore-based operators remotely control HullSkater units carried by customer vessels, using non-abrasive cleaning and cloud-connected inspection data to manage hull condition between conventional dry-docking periods.

- 2026-08-11 - Partnership - Jotun and MSC agree to deploy HullSkater on MSC Daniela
Jotun announced an agreement with MSC to install and operate its HullSkater hull-cleaning solution on MSC Daniela. The package combines SeaQuantum Skate coating with robotic inspection and cleaning, and was installed during a June 2026 drydock in China. Jotun said maintaining a clean hull supports vessel efficiency, fuel and carbon reductions, and reduced risk of invasive species transfer.

Jotun announced that Carnival Cruise Line is the first cruise operator to use its HullSkater solution. Carnival Pride is using a package that combines HullSkater with hull coating, monitoring, inspections, digital reporting and a performance guarantee. The program is intended to support fuel efficiency, lower carbon emissions and marine-biodiversity protection.

Physical inspections across 33 vessels found no fouling during the assessed periods. DNV reviewed performance data from 12 vessels covering an average 3.5 years in service and found no measurable speed loss. Hull Skating Solutions combines the HullSkater robot, SeaQuantum Skate coating, monitoring and technical service.

Jotun and Thoresen Shipping signed a commercial agreement to implement Hull Skating Solutions on the bulk carrier Thor Brave. The solution combines Jotun’s antifouling system with the HullSkater robotic platform, which was developed with Kongsberg for proactive underwater-hull cleaning. Jotun says the system is intended to maintain hull performance between sailings, reduce fuel use and carbon emissions, and protect biodiversity by preventing early-stage fouling.
