About Makesense Technology

MakeSense Technology’s Vector pairs a handheld haptic device with a smartphone worn on the user’s chest. The phone’s camera and positioning sensors contribute to localisation, while the MakeSense app holds the selected route. A directional dial and vibration communicate which way to move, giving the user navigation cues through touch.

Routes can be created and saved in the app, including paths prepared with a sighted guide. The system is designed to complement a white cane, adding route guidance while the cane continues to serve its mobility role. MakeSense is recruiting people who are blind or have low vision into its testing programme, using their feedback to refine the relationship between positioning, saved routes and the handheld interface.

Research

  • MakeSense and Imperial demonstrate shape-changing navigation interface

2024-12-10 - Research Publication - The study compared shape-based guidance with vibration feedback in a virtual-reality location task. Participants with visual impairment performed the target-location task at a level comparable with sighted participants. Innovate UK supported the research with Bravo Victor and Imperial College London.
