About Portal Aircraft
Portal Aircraft is developing a vertical-lift propulsion architecture built around one central gas turbine and multiple distributed rotors. Instead of routing power through batteries, electric motors, a central gearbox or long driveshafts, the concept directs turbine exhaust toward the rotor blades to generate rotation at each lift unit.
The Fort Worth company is moving the architecture through early propulsion testing and a U.S. small-business research programme. It positions the system for aircraft that need vertical take-off with longer endurance and rapid refuelling, including unmanned defence and commercial applications. The August 2026 test remains a powertrain demonstration rather than a released aircraft product.
