About Prairie Robotics
Prairie Robotics installs cameras, positioning hardware and edge computers on refuse and recycling trucks so each collection becomes a source of material data. Computer-vision models classify visible items, associate observations with pickup locations and estimate contamination or diversion patterns at route level. A related landfill system identifies incoming materials and estimates weights, giving operators a more granular picture than periodic manual audits.
Municipal customers use the resulting dashboard to target education, adjust collection programmes and measure whether individual neighbourhoods are changing behaviour. Rather than issuing generic notices city-wide, staff can send households feedback tied to what was observed at their own pickup while planners compare routes and material categories over time. Prairie has expanded this approach across dozens of Canadian and US municipalities, positioning its product as an operational data layer for existing collection fleets rather than a replacement for the trucks themselves.

Events
- 2024-02-01 - Deployment - Leduc reports 50 percent contamination reduction
Truck-mounted cameras scanned organics as carts were emptied and associated flagged items with households using location data. The programme sent 870 personalised educational postcards during 2023 while blurring unrelated image content for privacy. Leduc reported that organics contamination fell by half over the pilot period.

The system completed more than 120,000 recycling audits without requiring drivers to flag contamination manually. It generated more than 6,700 personalised postcards and 600 digital notifications during the first six months. Prairie Robotics reported a 45 percent reduction in contaminants during the programme.

Conexus Venture Capital led the round with participation from Max Schmeiser, Kerry Lumbard and Dan Cugnet. The financing followed Prairie Robotics' early municipal pilots and Saskatchewan innovation-program support. The company planned to expand its team and AI-based recycling-contamination service across Canada and the United States.
