About Tongji Hospital
Tongji Hospital combines clinical care, medical education and research within Huazhong University of Science and Technology's Tongji Medical College. Founded in Shanghai in 1900, it moved to Wuhan in 1955 and developed into a multidisciplinary teaching hospital.
Its remote-surgery work includes a May 2026 demonstration in which Indian urologist Syed Mohammed Ghouse operated from a console in Wuhan while a clinical team attended the patient in India. The teams reviewed examination data and planned the procedure together; staff beside the patient handled anaesthesia and instrument placement. The surgeon then used transmitted 3D images and hand controls to guide a bladder-reconnection procedure. The demonstration formed part of a surgical congress programme that connected operating teams across several countries.
