Cassie

About

About Cassie

Cassie used spring-like articulated legs and a compact torso-free structure to isolate the problems of dynamic bipedal locomotion. The platform supported walking over uneven ground, recovery from disturbances and increasingly fast outdoor movement, giving research teams access to a durable physical system for testing control and reinforcement-learning methods.

Agility sold Cassie as a research platform from 2017 until 2019 before transitioning production to Digit. Digit added a torso, arms, perception and onboard compute to the locomotion architecture developed through Cassie. The earlier robot is therefore a discontinued research platform and technical predecessor, not part of Agility Robotics’ current commercial product portfolio.

  • SAC-Based Gait Generation and Robust Balance Control for Cassie Robots in Unknown Terrain

2026-02-15 - Research Publication - The development of robust locomotion strategies for bipedal robots remains a significant challenge in robotics, particularly when navigating unstructured and unknown environments. The Cassie robot, a dynamic bipedal platform with high degrees of freedom and underactuated passive dynamics, presents specific control difficulties that classical model-based approaches often fail to address adequately due to modeling mismatches and computational latency. This paper proposes a novel framework utilizing Soft Actor-Critic (SAC), an off-policy deep reinforcement learning algorithm, to generate stable gait patterns and ensure robust balance control. Unlike standard on-policy methods, SAC optimizes a maximum entropy objective, which encourages substantial exploration and provides greater robustness to external disturbances. We introduce a comprehensive reward function design and a domain randomizat
