About Vicarious Surgical System
The Vicarious Surgical System is a single-port robotic platform designed for abdominal surgery. Its patient cart introduces a camera and two robotic instruments through one incision, while the surgeon operates the instruments and camera from a separate console using hand controllers. The current disposable requires a 1.8 cm incision; the system architecture can accommodate access as small as 1.2 cm, and a 1.5 cm disposable is in development.
Each instrument arm incorporates 28 sensors and is designed to move downward, sideways, upward and backward inside the abdomen. Centered pivoting and immersive stereoscopic 3D imaging give the surgeon a responsive view and control of motion around the access point. The system remains in development, has Breakthrough Device designation, is not FDA cleared and is not commercially available in the United States.
