About Nexterity
Nexterity's robotic tool positions itself at an industrial pipe flange and operates several fasteners while the pipefitter supervises from a safer distance. Computer vision aligns the mechanism with standardised flange and bolt patterns, and remote human control retains authority during opening or closing of a pipeline joint.
The system is intended for routine maintenance, plant retrofits and new construction where manual impact-wrench work exposes hands and workers to stored-energy and process hazards. Nexterity targets tightening within 10 foot-pounds of the selected torque and up to eight times the speed of manual unbolting. The current hardware is described as a first prototype, so its performance claims represent development targets rather than a mature field fleet.

The prototype automated flange-bolt tightening and controlled torquing. Testing captured precise process data alongside the physical operation. The trial took place at PRCIs Technology Development Center for energy-industry stakeholders.

The operator aligned the tool, stepped back and commanded specified torque from a controller. The robot torqued four orthogonally opposed bolts at once and rotated remotely across larger bolt patterns. Controlled-environment demonstrations followed multiple prototype iterations ahead of industrial field tests.

The robot replaced manual wrench work on industrial pipeline flanges. The system tightened and loosened multiple bolts while removing workers from high-risk pinch points. Nexterity linked automation to faster processing, improved precision and reduced crew exposure.

The showcase opened at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on April 30, 2025. Nexterity displayed its hands-free pipeline bolting technology on the main exhibition floor. The company also pitched during the accelerator cohorts final presentations.

The robot operated on a PVC pipe setup during the SXSW-adjacent event in Lockhart, Texas. The demonstration station received three to four hours of attendee traffic. The trial exposed product improvements and logistics lessons for future travelling field demonstrations.

Nexterity was one of 10 companies selected from more than 130 applicants. Each cohort company received a $100,000 equity-free grant from the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative. The 13-week programme covered customer discovery, manufacturing, fundraising and team development.
