HII
About
About HII
HII is organised around Ingalls Shipbuilding, Newport News Shipbuilding and Mission Technologies. The first two divisions construct and sustain major U.S. naval vessel classes, while Mission Technologies supplies unmanned systems, C5ISR, electronic warfare, AI and training capabilities. This structure gives the group both a large industrial base and an internal route for fielding autonomous maritime platforms.
Robotics increasingly also shapes how HII manufactures. Ingalls and Newport News have introduced robotic fabrication, automated steel processing and cobot applications, while the HYPR initiative is developing AI-enabled production cells for the ROMULUS uncrewed surface-vessel programme. The August 2026 HD Hyundai Heavy Industries welding pilot extends that automation into unit-fabrication work that had remained predominantly manual.

Events
- 2026-09-29 - Contract Award - HII wins U.S. Navy contract for 10 ROMULUS USVs
ROMULUS uses HII's modular, open-architecture Odyssey Autonomous Control Solutions. HII began securing ROMULUS production capacity, infrastructure, partners and suppliers in 2025. Incat Crowther confirmed on October 6 that its Louisiana team will continue providing naval architecture and design services throughout the ROMULUS build programme.
Source - 2026-09-22 - Facility Opening - HII opens 10,000-square-foot Pocasset unmanned-systems expansion
The site builds and integrates REMUS underwater vehicles and ROMULUS unmanned surface vessels. Added capacity supports Lionfish small UUV production and the REMUS 620 programme. HII says Odyssey autonomy integration and simulation work will also use the expanded campus.
Source - 2026-08-06 - Contract Award - HII signs up to $900M in HYPR production agreements with Path and GrayMatter
HII may award up to $900 million in combined work to Path Robotics and GrayMatter Robotics over seven years. Awards depend on technology, manufacturing-readiness and performance milestones. The agreements cover development, qualification and later sourcing of autonomous shipbuilding processes.
Source - 2026-08-04 - Deployment - HII and HD Hyundai begin intelligent welding pilot at Ingalls
The systems automatically recognise workpieces and welding conditions and correct weld positions in real time. Captured process data will support quality control, process improvement and traceability. The pilot extends a 2025 cooperation agreement into fabrication areas that had relied predominantly on manual welding.
Source - 2026-05-15 - Production Milestone - HII and MetalCraft Marine deliver ROMULUS-25 autonomous USV prototypes
HII said the two ROMULUS-25 autonomous USVs were delivered in December 2025 and supported sea testing. The vessels were awarded under a Defense Innovation Unit contract for smaller form-factor autonomous boat prototypes for the U.S. Marine Corps. HII said ROMULUS-25 is powered by its Odyssey autonomy suite and is designed for up to 1,000 pounds of payload and up to 1,000 nautical miles of range.
Source - 2026-01-22 - Partnership - Incat Crowther joins the ROMULUS 190 development team
The partnership combines vessel engineering and construction work with HII’s Odyssey autonomous-control system. Construction of ROMULUS 190 was 30% complete at the time of the announcement. A commercial-standard hull and reconfigurable layout are intended to support repeatable construction and different mission configurations.
