About
About Caterpillar
Caterpillar has developed autonomy for off-road machinery since the 1980s and introduced its first commercial autonomous-haulage system in 2013. The company combines Cat heavy equipment with onboard perception and control, site infrastructure, fleet management, remote operations and dealer-led implementation through the MineStar Command portfolio.
Current offerings range from operator-assist and remote-control functions to fully autonomous surface haulage, autonomous drilling and automated underground load-haul-dump work. Caterpillar reports that Command-equipped fleets have moved more than 11 billion tonnes with no reported injuries. The platform has also moved beyond large mines: Cat 777 trucks at Luck Stone’s Bull Run quarry hauled more than two million tonnes during their first year of single-shift autonomous operation.

Timeline
Events
- 2026-09-15 - Deployment - Luck Stone expands Caterpillar autonomous haulage to two Virginia quarries
The expansion follows an 18-month Bull Run deployment that autonomously hauled more than 3.5 million tons after going live in November 2024. Boscobel and Bealeton will each receive fleets built around Cat 775 trucks, marking the first Caterpillar autonomous-haulage deployment on that model. Caterpillar and local dealer Carter Machinery will deliver the expansion alongside complementary technologies for loaders and other site equipment.

The collaboration combines Caterpillar engineering expertise and operational data with FieldAI robot-agnostic foundation models for complex industrial environments. Early applications include autonomous inspection, facility and jobsite digital twins, situational awareness and operational optimization. The programme uses NVIDIA accelerated computing and Omniverse technologies to develop physical-AI systems for heavy-industry operations.
