About
About Johnson & Johnson
Johnson & Johnson develops surgical robotics through two distinct platforms. OTTAVA integrates four arms into an operating table for surgeon-controlled soft-tissue procedures, while MONARCH uses a telescoping robotic bronchoscope, direct endoscopic vision and navigation software to reach peripheral lung targets. Each system has its own instruments, workflow, regulatory scope and commercial stage.
OTTAVA received U.S. De Novo authorisation in July 2026 for specified upper-abdominal general-surgery procedures, followed by a planned staged launch. In August, MONARCH QUEST 3 received 510(k) clearance as a software update for planning, navigation and targeting during robotically assisted bronchoscopy. These authorisations establish named indications and functions; they do not imply autonomous clinical decisions or unrestricted use across surgery.

Timeline
Events
- 2026-08-17 - Product Launch - Johnson & Johnson launches MONARCH QUEST 3 navigation update
QUEST 3 adds AI-powered nodule segmentation and navigation enhancements designed to account for anatomical shift. The update adds a 3D Compass orientation overlay and broader compatibility with mobile and fixed cone-beam CT systems. Polyphonic integration adds centralized procedural-video review and collaboration tools.
Source - 2026-07-28 - Deployment - Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi completes Middle East's first MONARCH robotic bronchoscopy
MONARCH guides a flexible endoscope through the lung airways to biopsy small, hard-to-reach nodules. The completed procedure establishes clinical use at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. The hospital used the platform to support continuous-vision navigation and tissue sampling in peripheral lung anatomy.
Source - 2026-07-22 - Regulatory - OTTAVA receives US FDA De Novo authorization
Authorization covers multiple upper-abdominal general-surgery procedures. OTTAVA coordinates four table-integrated robotic arms with synchronized table motion. A 30-patient pivotal gastric-bypass study completed every procedure robotically without conversion.
Source - 2026-01-07 - Regulatory - Johnson & Johnson submits OTTAVA robotic surgical system to FDA
Johnson & Johnson MedTech submitted the OTTAVA robotic surgical system to the U.S. FDA. The submission was supported by data from the system's investigational device exemption study. The event marks a regulatory milestone after first clinical cases were completed in 2025.
Source - 2025-04-14 - Capability - Johnson & Johnson MedTech completes first clinical cases with OTTAVA surgical robot
Johnson & Johnson MedTech completed the first cases in the clinical trial for the OTTAVA robotic surgical system. The first procedure was a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. The milestone moves OTTAVA from platform development into clinical use evidence for soft-tissue robotic surgery.
Source - 2025-03-12 - Regulatory - FDA clears MONARCH QUEST robotic-bronchoscopy upgrade
MONARCH QUEST adds enhanced AI navigation and a verified interface for GE HealthCare’s OEC 3D mobile cone-beam CT imaging system. Its NVIDIA RTX accelerated computing stack increases real-time computational power by 260% for navigation algorithms. The update combines scope-in-sheath control and continuous vision with intraprocedural 3D imaging for targeting and tool-in-lesion confirmation.
Source - 2024-11-13 - Regulatory - Johnson & Johnson receives FDA IDE approval for OTTAVA robotic surgical system
Johnson & Johnson MedTech received FDA investigational device exemption approval for OTTAVA. The approval allowed the company to begin a U.S. clinical trial of the robotic surgical system. The milestone preceded the first completed OTTAVA cases and later FDA submission.
Source - 2019-12-20 - Acquisition - Johnson & Johnson agrees to acquire Verily's Verb Surgical stake
The transaction covered Verily's remaining stake after the companies' multi-year surgical-robotics collaboration. Johnson & Johnson expected the acquisition to close in the first half of 2020, subject to antitrust clearance and customary conditions.
Source - 2015-12-10 - Partnership - Johnson & Johnson and Verily form Verb Surgical
Johnson & Johnson announced Verb Surgical's formation on December 10, 2015, following an earlier Ethicon-Google Life Sciences collaboration. Ethicon and Verily contributed intellectual property, in-process research assets and operating expertise to the new company. Verb's planned platform combined robotics, surgical instrumentation, visualization, machine learning, analytics and connectivity.
