About Icarus
Icarus is developing APOLLO as a recoverable solar aircraft that occupies the operating space between conventional drones and satellites. The autonomous platform is designed to remain above 60,000 feet for weeks, using daytime solar generation and stored energy to maintain persistent sensing or communications coverage without fuel stops or orbital revisit gaps.
One aircraft is intended to monitor more than 1,000 square miles and return low-latency data for defence, disaster response, environmental monitoring and connectivity missions. Icarus designs, manufactures and assembles the airframes in Los Angeles and conducts flight development in the Mojave Desert. The company was founded in 2023, flew its first fully solar autonomous APOLLO prototype in 2024 and is now iterating the system toward operational deployment; its multi-week endurance and coverage figures remain design targets rather than a broadly deployed service record.
