About Maglev Aero

HyperDrive replaces a conventional central motor, shaft and hub with a large rim-driven rotor supported by magnetic bearings. Electromagnetic forces levitate and rotate the rim, allowing many short blades to sweep a large disc area at lower loading than a small high-speed propeller. The motor and bearing functions are distributed around the circumference, reducing mechanical contact and allowing individual segments to tolerate selected faults.

Aircraft developers can integrate the propulsion ring into different configurations, including distributed electric aircraft, cargo drones and vertical-lift vehicles. MagLev Aero’s HyperDelta concept demonstrates how the system could be arranged around an airframe. The company’s commercial focus is the propulsion technology, and HyperDelta is not offered as a production aircraft. Engineering work centres on rotor aerodynamics, electromagnetic suspension, power electronics and control needed to keep the levitated rotor stable through changing thrust and flight conditions.
