About
About Maglev Aero
HyperDrive replaces a conventional central motor, shaft and hub with a large rim-driven rotor supported by magnetic bearings. Electromagnetic forces levitate and rotate the rim, allowing many short blades to sweep a large disc area at lower loading than a small high-speed propeller. The motor and bearing functions are distributed around the circumference, reducing mechanical contact and allowing individual segments to tolerate selected faults.
Aircraft developers can integrate the propulsion ring into different configurations, including distributed electric aircraft, cargo drones and vertical-lift vehicles. MagLev Aero’s HyperDelta concept demonstrates how the system could be arranged around an airframe. The company’s commercial focus is the propulsion technology, and HyperDelta is not offered as a production aircraft. Engineering work centres on rotor aerodynamics, electromagnetic suspension, power electronics and control needed to keep the levitated rotor stable through changing thrust and flight conditions.

Timeline
Events
- 2026-09-25 - Award - MagLev Aero receives dual DARPA awards for drone-propulsion development
The MVP award funds a full-scale, flight-relevant propulsion demonstration intended to reach Technology Readiness Level 6 in a relevant operational environment. The EEI award supports an embedded business leader to advance federal-acquisition strategy and transition opportunities. MagLev Aero says its rim-driven HyperDrive platform is designed to improve payload, range and acoustic performance for autonomous and crewed aircraft.
Source - 2025-04-22 - Partnership - MagLev Aero and XTI Aerospace partner on quiet propulsion
The collaboration focused on fan-in-wing propulsion for vertical-lift aircraft. MagLev Aero technology targets electric aviation noise and efficiency constraints. The partnership connected MagLev propulsion work with XTI Aerospace aircraft development.
