About
About MRV Systems
MRV Systems develops autonomous subsurface profiling floats and underwater gliders for ocean observation, scientific research and defence. Founded in 2010 as a spin-off from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, it builds instruments that collect water-column measurements over extended missions. Its portfolio includes the S2-A profiling float, the air-launched ALAMO family and DeepSOLO, which is designed to profile to depths of 6,000 metres. The Spray2 glider extends the portfolio to underwater survey missions. Vehicles can be deployed from ships or aircraft, depending on the model.
MRV supplies floats and component kits to organisations contributing to the international Argo ocean-observation programme, as well as platforms for the U.S. Navy. Its Navy work includes encrypted autonomous subsurface profiling systems and development towards air-deployment certification for a next-generation float. The company joined General Oceans in April 2026; its headquarters and manufacturing base are in Wood Dale, Illinois. Scientific and military configurations have distinct mission and sensor requirements.

- 2026-10-01 - Contract Award - MRV Systems joins shared $51.2 million U.S. Navy IDIQ and receives first task order
The $51.2 million ceiling is shared across the three awardees; task orders are competed and the framework guarantees no minimum order volume or revenue. MRV is also working with the Navy on air-deployment certification for a next-generation float. The company joined General Oceans in April 2026 and supplies scientific floats to the global Argo programme.
Source - 2026-04-10 - Acquisition - General Oceans agrees to acquire MRV Systems
MRV adds long-duration autonomous profiling vehicles used in ocean research, climate monitoring and maritime-domain awareness. The company had about 22 employees across San Diego, Wood Dale and Seattle, expanding General Oceans’ US operating footprint. MRV serves more than 30 customers, including NOAA, NASA and the US Naval Oceanographic Office.
