Cardinal is Amazon’s robotic package-sorting cell, selecting an individual parcel from a pile, lifting it, reading its label and placing it into a destination cart. Computer vision supports selection and placement, moving the sorting step earlier in the outbound shipping process.
Amazon paired Cardinal with Proteus in a 2023 trial near Nashville. Cardinal grouped packages destined for the same postal code into carts, and Proteus transported the loaded carts toward delivery trucks. This divides stationary package handling from movement across the dock. The arrangement connects parcel identification and cart loading with the next stage of dispatch.

2022-06-21 - Product Launch - Cardinal uses artificial intelligence and computer vision to select a package from a pile, lift it, read its label and place it into a GoCart. The prototype was being tested with packages weighing up to 50 pounds. Amazon said the workcell was intended to move package sorting earlier in the shipping process and expected fulfillment-center deployment in 2023.
