About Proteus

Proteus is Amazon Robotics' autonomous mobile robot for moving wheeled GoCart containers through fulfilment-centre outbound workflows. It travels freely around employees without a segregated operating zone, approaches a cart, lifts it from below and transports loads approaching 400 kilograms between work areas.

The currently deployed generation uses onboard perception, navigation and safety systems to work in the same spaces as people while reducing manual cart movement. Amazon reported Proteus operating at 25 fulfilment centres in the United States in 2026. A newer generation was still in laboratory piloting at that date, with European deployment planned for the first half of 2027; that planned model and schedule remain separate from the deployed fleet described here.

  • Amazon introduces next-generation Proteus and expands Vulcan and STARK in Europe

    2026-06-04 - Product Launch - The new Proteus can receive conversational task prompts and determine task priority, route and timing while moving loads beyond its earlier dock-area scope. Vulcan and the STARK tote-handling system are part of a planned robotics expansion across European fulfillment sites; STARK is scheduled for 15 sites by 2027. The robotics programme sits within more than €10 billion of planned European fulfillment-center investment, while Proteus deployment in Europe is targeted for the first half of 2027.

Proteus was introduced as Amazon's first fully autonomous mobile robot for movement through open operating areas. The milestone marked ten years since Amazon acquired Kiva Systems in 2012.
