Fernride Autonomous Terminal Tractor

About

About Fernride Autonomous Terminal Tractor

Fernride’s autonomous terminal tractor connects yard driving with remote human assistance. A remote operator can supervise multiple vehicles and help resolve situations that the autonomy system cannot complete independently. The system is designed for mixed traffic in existing terminal layouts and connects with terminal operating software, energy management and crane operations.

In July 2025, Fernride and HHLA began a gradual transition to driverless operation at HHLA’s terminal in Estonia, involving three terminal tractors. The staged rollout followed technical assessments and regulatory engagement for that site. It brings autonomous vehicle movement into an operating container terminal while retaining a human assistance channel for exceptional situations.
