About Impossible Metals
Impossible Metals is developing the Eureka autonomous underwater vehicle family for selective collection of polymetallic nodules. Onboard cameras and AI identify individual nodules and visible marine organisms, while multiple robotic arms pick selected material from the seabed rather than removing a continuous layer of sediment.
Collected nodules are stored within the vehicle and returned without a conventional dredging riser or processing vessel generating a continuous midwater discharge. Eureka III is being prepared for testing in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone as the company advances vehicle endurance, manipulation and collection-rate performance toward commercial mineral operations.
Team
- Oliver Gunasekara - Co-founder, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director - Leads Impossible Metals' selective seabed nodule-collection and critical-minerals business.
- Jason Gillham - Co-founder, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Operating Officer - Directs the Eureka underwater vehicle, buoyancy-engine and selective robotic collection technology.
- Renee Grogan - Co-founder and Chief Sustainability Officer - Leads Impossible Metals' sustainability strategy and environmental approach to critical-mineral collection.
Timeline
Events
- 2026-07-07 - Partnership - Deep Sea Minerals and Impossible Metals sign robotic collection MOU
The framework covers potential technology deployment, test mining, environmental monitoring and pilot planning. Impossible Metals' system uses computer vision and robotic arms to target individual polymetallic nodules. The non-binding MOU does not commit either party to testing or commercial production.

Impossible Metals demonstrated the Eureka II autonomous underwater vehicle to stakeholders in Collingwood Harbor. The demonstration occurred on November 13, 2024, and followed the earlier deep-water test. The company presented Eureka II as a lower-cost autonomous system for selective mineral collection.
