Intuitive's surgical workflow connects a surgeon console, a patient-side robotic system and specialised instruments. The surgeon views the operating field through the console and controls instrument and endoscope movements, with each surgical manoeuvre remaining under the surgeon's direction. The surrounding offering includes instruments, imaging, training and service for clinical programmes.
Its Ion bronchoscopy platform uses a different mechanism: a fibre-optic sensor measures the shape of a flexible catheter as the clinician navigates the airways. A real-time three-dimensional view shows its position and orientation, while robotic control helps hold the catheter at the target for biopsy-tool passage. The camera probe and biopsy instruments share the working channel, supporting navigation and sampling through a narrow catheter.

More than 1,000 Ion systems are installed in hospitals worldwide. Physicians used Ion for more than 140,000 lung biopsies globally during 2025. The shape-sensing catheter is designed to reach peripheral lung nodules and stabilise biopsy tools.

Intuitive completed the acquisition of da Vinci and Ion distribution businesses covering Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta, San Marino, and associated territories. Intuitive said the acquired markets had a combined installed base of more than 470 da Vinci systems as of December 31, 2025, while Ion had recently launched in Italy and Spain.
