About Open Robotics

Open Robotics is the operating name of the Open Source Robotics Foundation, the nonprofit organisation that develops and maintains core open robotics infrastructure. Its principal projects include ROS for robot application software, Gazebo for physics-based simulation, ros-controls for real-time hardware interfaces and Open-RMF for coordinating fleets, doors, lifts and shared building resources.

These projects sit below individual robot applications: manufacturers use ROS packages and drivers to connect sensors, actuators and planning software; developers test behaviour in Gazebo; and operators use Open-RMF to manage heterogeneous robots in common facilities. The foundation also runs build farms, continuous integration and release infrastructure that lets open-source packages be distributed across supported platforms. Commercial companies can build proprietary products on the stack while contributing drivers, middleware and improvements back to the shared codebase.
