About WanderB-VTOL

WanderB-VTOL is BlueBird Aero Systems’ electric hybrid fixed-wing aircraft for tactical observation and mapping. It combines vertical take-off and landing with fixed-wing cruise, allowing a small crew to work from clearings, rooftops or maritime locations without a runway. The current manufacturer page lists an 18 kg take-off weight, three-hour endurance and communications reaching 50 km.

Electro-optical, infrared and mapping configurations deliver real-time imagery and georeferenced information through BlueBird ground control. Three integrated communications links support mission continuity in contested radio environments. By February 2025, BlueBird reported more than 350 WanderB platforms delivered to over 25 customers. The separately described WanderB-FC configuration uses hydrogen fuel-cell power to extend endurance beyond six hours; that upgrade’s endurance does not describe the standard battery aircraft. Procurement and payload choices are agreed directly with BlueBird.

    2023-06-21 - Capability - BlueBird introduced MagiCam as a 3D high-resolution large-area mapping capability integrated with WanderB-VTOL. The payload includes a 103 MP sensor, five-look projected image footprint, nadir imaging, onboard processing and high-speed storage in a 1,500 g package. The system extends WanderB-VTOL beyond ISR into high-resolution tactical mapping and geospatial collection workflows.

  • BlueBird selected to supply WanderB-VTOL and ThunderB-VTOL systems to Moroccan Army

    2022-09-25 - Commercial Order - BlueBird said it was selected to supply WanderB-VTOL and ThunderB-VTOL systems to the Moroccan Army. The company said the systems were already operational in ISTAR, border security, law enforcement, convoy and armed-forces protection and artillery-support missions. Secondary defence coverage described the order as involving about 150 WanderB and ThunderB VTOL drones, but BlueBird own post only states dozens of systems.

  • BlueBird completes delivery of 100 WanderB-VTOL systems to European customer

    2021-06-15 - Production Milestone - The 100 WanderB-VTOL aircraft were part of a transaction for more than 150 WanderB-VTOL and ThunderB-VTOL UAVs. IAI described the overall transaction as worth tens of millions of US dollars. BlueBird completed delivery within the agreed timetable despite COVID-19 conditions.

    2020-02-26 - Commercial Order - BlueBird received an order worth tens of millions of euros for more than 150 VTOL UAS from an undisclosed European customer. The order covered WanderB-VTOL mini UAVs and ThunderB-VTOL tactical UAVs. BlueBird said the systems were intended for infantry, armored units, artillery corps and special forces, with ISTAR as the primary operational role.
