About
About Icarus Robotics
Icarus Robotics is developing human-controlled machines that learn from demonstrations, with commercial space stations as the first working environment. Its free-flying Joyride platform is intended to extend embodied AI into microgravity operations, where moving and manipulating objects require different control strategies from those used on Earth.
In March 2026, the company contracted Voyager Technologies to manage an International Space Station demonstration planned for early 2027. Voyager's role covers payload integration, safety certification, launch coordination and support during the mission. The demonstration is intended to validate autonomous navigation, manoeuvrability and operational performance inside a working station, providing a flight test for the technology before wider orbital labour applications.

- 2026-09-17 - Demonstration - Icarus Robotics completes parabolic flight campaign ahead of ISS mission
The campaign produced 66 periods of weightlessness across four flights, totalling 22 minutes of active testing, run from Canada because the United States currently lacks parabolic flight capability. JOY validated three capabilities in zero gravity for the first time: manipulation of its arms under disturbance, position and velocity tracking through each weightless period, and control of its own flight. JOY has been promoted from a demonstration flight to a full mission operator on the strength of industry demand, and is to ship to NASA in January for a year-long ISS mission.
Source - 2026-07-15 - Partnership - KULR selected to power Icarus Robotics JOY free-flyer for ISS mission
JOY is designed to navigate inside pressurised space habitats and perform useful work with autonomous free-flight and dexterous manipulation. The selection combines KULR space-qualified energy-system engineering with Icarus Robotics embodied-AI robotics. The programme is intended to establish flight heritage for autonomous robotic labour and infrastructure support in orbit.
Source - 2026-03-30 - Partnership - Voyager awarded contract with Icarus Robotics to manage Joyride demonstration aboard the ISS
Icarus selected Voyager to manage the mission for Joyride, its free-flying robotic platform, on an upcoming International Space Station demonstration planned for early 2027. Voyager's role includes payload integration, safety certification, launch coordination, and real-time mission execution support for the flight. The demonstration is intended to validate autonomous navigation, maneuverability, and operational performance in a live space-station environment.
Source - 2025-09-17 - Funding - Icarus Robotics raises $6.1M seed round to scale the robotic labor force for space
Icarus announced a $6.1 million seed round to advance embodied-AI robotic systems for orbital labor tasks. The company framed the raise around building dexterous mobile robots to handle routine, hazardous, and time-consuming work in space at lower cost than human labor. The funding supported Icarus' push toward a future ISS demonstration and broader commercial space-station robotics deployments.
