Founded by Emanuel Sizmann and Florian Heiß in 2023, excav emerged from work with Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and entered the ESA Business Incubation Centre Bavaria in 2024. Its early product was recognised by VDBUM and BayStartUP before the company converted from a German UG into excav GmbH in 2025.
The PILOT system uses one GNSS sensor mounted directly on the tool, a cab display and a tablet application. It imports PDF plans and terrain models, accepts RTK corrections over NTRIP and is marketed with relative accuracy of roughly ±15 mm under suitable correction conditions. A magnetic, cable-free installation and five-minute tool calibration distinguish it from permanently installed machine-control systems, making the same kit usable across mixed fleets. The operator remains in control; the platform is an assistance and positioning layer rather than full machine autonomy.

- 2025-04-28 - Award - excav PILOT wins demopark 2025 silver innovation medal
The official winner announcement was made on 28 April 2025 in Darmstadt. The award covered excav's mobile 3D GNSS assistance system for construction machinery. The medal presentation took place on the first day of demopark 2025 in Hörselberg.

The programme provides two years of financial support from ESA and the Free State of Bavaria. Fraunhofer provides technical and business support during the programme. The milestone is an incubator-programme acceptance and support award rather than a private equity financing.
