The Airframes division designs and produces composite and metallic structures, electrical wiring interconnection systems, transparencies, ice-protection hardware and landing-gear components. Its manufacturing capabilities include composites, metal bonding, high-speed machining and additive processes. These systems are delivered into customer aircraft programmes, including advanced-air-mobility platforms and defence aircraft, where GKN works as a tier-one engineering and production partner.

Uncrewed programmes now form a direct part of that supplier role. GKN has manufactured flight-ready wings, fins and control surfaces for BAE Systems’ Brontanax autonomous aircraft prototype and provides thermoplastic flight-control surfaces for Joby aircraft. It also supplies wiring and manufacturing work to other autonomous-aircraft programmes. The company therefore belongs in the supporting stack as an aerostructure and subsystem integrator, while vehicle autonomy, mission software and final aircraft ownership remain with its customers.

    GKN Aerospace engineered and manufactured the Brontanax wings, fins and control surfaces and completed their integration into the flight-ready prototype. The composite structures were produced at GKN Aerospace’s Cowes design and assembly facility on the Isle of Wight.   • 2026-05-15 - Contract Award - UK MOD advances Anduril team with GKN Aerospace into Project NYX

    The planned platforms are intended to operate alongside Apache helicopters to add combat mass, extend reach and improve survivability in contested environments. GKN’s role covers lightweight aerostructures, advanced manufacturing and production scaling from its Isle of Wight base, which employs around 1,000 people.     The approximately £12 million award covers a clean-sheet flying demonstrator and dedicated turbojet engine to be developed within 18 months. Work combines structures and propulsion capability from Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK, with engine leadership in Sweden and airframe development in the Netherlands.
