  Volkswagen Slovakia replaced manual retrieval of components from floor-level containers and placement into a jig with a fully automated robotic process. Photoneo's solution centers on a PhoXi 3D Scanner XL that analyzes component CAD models to locate each part's position and orientation. The system uses a gripper to adjust part orientation and place components consistently, with Photoneo reporting improved stability, repeatability, throughput and reduced production costs.

  SABO selected the PhoXi 3D Scanner model L for the application. The vision system had to handle irregular shapes, reflective surfaces and apples placed randomly in a container. The robot workflow combined picking the fruit with placing it into packaging boxes.

  The anthropomorphic robot travelled on a 15-metre track serving six unloading bays and tyre stacks up to 1,600 millimetres high. A Photoneo device projected a laser pattern and generated a point cloud from which Bcnvision software calculated X, Y and Z pick coordinates. The controller corrected trajectories for misaligned tyre columns and optimized unloading while avoiding the container and gripper.

  A Photoneo 3D scanner identified pickable parts in a random bin and planned trajectories for a Stäubli TX2-90L robot. A Cognex camera checked part orientation before a Stäubli TS2-80 transferred components through forming and inspection stations. The completed workflow performed dimensional control and sorted finished parts into the appropriate output box.

  The scanner created a 3D point cloud to determine each container opening position, height and horizontal tilt.
