About Tesla
Optimus combines bipedal mobility, articulated hands, cameras and learned control for navigation and manipulation. Tesla develops the robot with teleoperation, human demonstrations, simulation and real-world robot data, using the company's perception, planning and onboard inference work for task learning.
Tesla is developing Optimus first for material handling and production-support work in its factories. In April 2026 it said first-generation production lines were being installed ahead of planned volume production, while describing the robot itself as still in development.

Notes
Profile notes
- Tesla reversed its attempt to automate final assembly too aggressively
reviewed 2026-07-20 - Tesla's Model 3 production plan leaned on unusually extensive factory automation, including tasks that later proved awkward for machines. Elon Musk acknowledged that excessive automation was a mistake and that humans were underrated, marking a real operating-strategy correction rather than evidence that the promised “machine that builds the machine” had been achieved as first conceived.
Source - Tesla did not disclose production supporting its January 2025 Optimus target
reviewed 2026-07-18 - During Tesla's January 2025 earnings webcast, Elon Musk said the company expected to make at least several thousand Optimus robots during 2025 for initial use inside Tesla factories. Tesla's subsequent full-year disclosures did not provide a 2025 Optimus production total supporting that scale.
