About ULC Technologies

ULC Technologies combines specialised gas-network equipment with field teams that operate it for utilities and contractors. CISBOT works inside live cast-iron mains to repair joints from within the pipe, while camera and crawler systems investigate blockages, material changes and other conditions without opening every section of the network.

Inspection results also support asset records. ULC’s locating services identify pipe routes and internal features, then add geographic coordinates for utility mapping. Its wider offering includes acoustic cross-bore detection, cased-pipeline inspection and electrical-conduit surveys. The business joins equipment development with on-site operation and data delivery, allowing utilities to obtain an inspection or repair service as well as the underlying technology.

Timeline

Events

  • 2025-03-18 - Award - ULC Technologies named a 2025 Fast Company energy innovator

ULC highlighted CISBOT, the DDC-125 drawdown compressor and its automated medium-voltage cable-end preparation system as examples of deployed innovation. The cable system had completed a fully remote end-preparation field test in February 2024 without human intervention at the work point. The recognition reflects ULC's expansion from gas-pipeline robotics into electric-utility automation while operating inside SPX Technologies.

  • 2024-11-15 - Deployment - ULC deploys 12-inch CISBOT for live gas-main repair

ULC Technologies successfully deployed its new 12-inch CISBOT for internal joint repair in a live cast-iron gas main. The robot sealed the original 60-joint scope and the customer expanded the work by another 29 joints. The 12-inch CISBOT extended ULC robotic cast-iron joint remediation into medium-diameter gas mains.

  • 2020-09-02 - Acquisition - SPX acquires ULC Robotics utility inspection technology business

ULC brought SPX a robotics-as-a-service operation built around CISBOT inspection and rehabilitation of live gas-distribution mains. SPX placed ULC in its Detection and Measurement segment to expand location, inspection and underground-infrastructure capabilities. At acquisition, ULC reported approximately 160 employees, a Hauppauge headquarters and a significant operating presence in the United Kingdom.

  • 2018-06-05 - Award - DOE funds ULC pipe-dwelling inspection robot development

The U.S. Department of Energy project targeted robotic inspection and rapid repair inside live natural-gas pipelines. ULC planned to study integration with SCADA networks so utilities could mobilize inspection in response to operating data. The funded concept placed a pipe-dwelling robot inside the network for repeatable access, distinct from one-time crew-launched inspection tools.
