About Honda Avatar Robot

Honda Avatar Robot is a wheeled research robot that lets a remote operator carry out hands-on work through two articulated arms and multi-fingered hands. Honda combines the hardware with AI-assisted teleoperation: the person chooses the action, while the control system helps align the hands with objects and adjust grasping forces. Goggles provide the robot’s viewpoint, and gloves convey contact information through vibration.

The current platform stands 1.7 metres tall and has 56 degrees of freedom, including sixteen in each hand. It is designed to handle tools and parts made for people. Honda is developing the system for situations where expertise needs to reach a distant or difficult site, including equipment maintenance, disaster response, healthcare and space exploration. These are development applications for the research programme.
