About Motional
Motional was formed in 2020 from the autonomous-driving joint venture between Aptiv and Hyundai Motor Group, bringing together teams descended from nuTonomy and Ottomatika. Hyundai later became the majority owner. The company maintains operations in Boston, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas and Singapore and has continued public-road development through changes in its commercial launch schedule.
Its principal platform is an all-electric IONIQ 5 robotaxi fitted with more than 30 cameras, radars and lidars and an onboard autonomy stack for perception, prediction, planning and control. Motional has also released research datasets including nuScenes and nuPlan, giving it an influence beyond its own fleet. The company is tracked as a Level 4 autonomous-vehicle builder; Aptiv's components and Hyundai's base vehicle are supporting layers rather than separate Motional products.
