About Calyo
Calyo is a Bristol sensing company founded around research in three-dimensional airborne ultrasound. Instead of treating ultrasound as a set of short-range parking points, its hardware forms spatial depth information that can be processed at the edge and fused with cameras, lidar or radar.
The company packages the technology through PULSE and SENSUS sensor systems and the PxAI processing stack. Its DRIVEN BY SOUND+ programme is intended to move the stack through vehicle integration and on-road validation at TRL 6–7, targeting the adverse-weather and close-range blind spots that can constrain optical perception systems.

Research
- Calyo presents deep-learning segmentation for 3D ultrasound perception
2025-12-18 - Research Publication - The work uses spatial data from the solid-state PULSE sensor for volumetric semantic segmentation. Its abstract positions 3D ultrasound as a complementary modality to camera and lidar for harsh or cluttered environments. The reported results are promising but explicitly identify larger datasets, refined ground truth and weighted loss functions as future improvements.

- 2026-08-10 - Award - Calyo secures £1.25m for all-weather 3-D ultrasound programme
DRIVEN BY SOUND+ combines Calyo PULSE sensing, PxAI edge compute, AI perception and multisensor fusion with vehicle control. The programme targets on-road validation at TRL 6–7 in rain, fog, spray, glare and low-light conditions. The work is intended to demonstrate ultrasound as a complementary perception layer rather than replace the full vehicle sensor suite.

The system creates an ultrasound safety curtain for falls, gap incidents and track trespass, including when no train is present. Calyo says the sensing remains usable in rain, fog, darkness and crowded environments where visibility-based sensors can be constrained. The programme includes a live demonstration in a representative station environment for rail stakeholders.
