About Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is a Japanese manufacturer of energy, industrial, aerospace and defense systems. Its robotics work spans hazardous-site inspection, autonomous machinery and unmanned defense platforms. EX ROVR ASCENT is an explosion-proof tracked robot that collects plant inspection data, climbs industrial stairs and positions sensors with a six-axis arm. MHI has tested it in operating ENEOS refineries and at an overseas power plant, combining autonomous patrols with remote supervision.

The group's defense work combines physical platforms with partners' autonomy, communications and command systems. Its September 2026 alliance with NEC covers operational planning, command-and-control and unmanned assets, while work with Shield AI and ABEJA addresses unmanned-aircraft autonomy. These programmes sit within a diversified industrial group whose businesses also include power generation, ships, logistics equipment and aviation. MHI trades in Tokyo under stock code 7011.

Notes

Profile notes

  • Wakamaru reached limited commercial sale but never became the household robot platform Mitsubishi demonstrated

reviewed 2026-07-20 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries offered Wakamaru in a limited Japanese release after presenting it as a domestic communication robot. Production did not scale into a sustained consumer line, and later units mainly appeared in institutional demonstrations and research. A small number of delivered robots does not validate the broader household-market expectation surrounding the launch.
