Able Innovations
About
About Able Innovations
ALTA positions itself beside a bed, stretcher or imaging table and uses its transfer surface to move a patient laterally without staff lifting or pulling the person across sheets. Powered strafing, zero-radius turning, height adjustment and tilt help one caregiver align the platform in constrained hospital rooms.
Sensors monitor surrounding obstacles, support-surface position and the patient during the transfer, allowing the device to modify its motion around safety conditions. Able supplies implementation support alongside the platform, and ALTA has progressed into hospital evaluations and deployments in Canada and the United States rather than remaining a laboratory prototype.

Timeline
Events
- 2026-03-04 - Deployment - Lahey deploys Able Innovations ALTA patient-transfer platform
The installation marked ALTA's first hospital implementation in the United States. The platform automates lateral transfers and powered transport while keeping a caregiver in supervisory control. Lahey adopted the system to support patient safety, care-team wellbeing and more consistent transfer workflows.
Source - 2026-01-28 - Deployment - Mission Memorial Hospital adopts Able Innovations ALTA platform
The deployment introduced ALTA into a community-hospital workflow for transfers between beds and stretchers. Able designed the system for one-person, low-effort operation to reduce manual handling and related staff injury exposure. The British Columbia installation extended ALTA beyond larger academic and specialist healthcare environments.
Source - 2025-04-16 - Deployment - Able Innovations expands ALTA evaluation and deployment across five Canadian providers
The participating providers were Bruyere Health, University Health Network, St. Joseph's Health Care London, Nova Scotia Health and Vancouver Coastal Health. The programme evaluated robotic transfers between beds and stretchers in operating care environments. The multi-provider rollout expanded ALTA beyond a single procurement and created a national evidence base for safety, dignity and workforce impact.
Source - 2023-06-19 - Partnership - Able Innovations joins CAN Health Network for clinical access and scale-up
CAN Health connects Canadian technology companies with healthcare operators that can evaluate market-ready systems in clinical settings. The programme gives Able access to end-user feedback and a route to scale across participating healthcare organisations. The partnership established the commercial pathway later used for ALTA evaluations and deployments across Canada.
Source - 2023-02-28 - Contract Award - Bruyere procures Able Innovations ALTA patient-transfer platform
The procurement placed ALTA with a named Canadian provider specialising in geriatric care and rehabilitation. AGE-WELL and the Ontario Bioscience Innovation Organization supported the path to procurement. The order represented a commercial step from clinical development toward hospital operation of the robotic transfer system.
Source - 2023-02-03 - Award - FedDev Ontario provides Able Innovations C$797,031 repayable contribution
The support came through FedDev Ontario's Business Scale-Up and Productivity stream. Able said it would use the C$797,031 investment to purchase manufacturing equipment and create critical jobs. The government-backed capital supported the transition from product development toward repeatable Canadian manufacturing.
