About Gaia AI
Gaia's workflow begins with a stand and plot design, either created in the system or uploaded from an existing plan. The plots are divided into collection tasks, and foresters follow their survey route with the backpack and mobile application. Each field collection is therefore tied to the inventory design and its assigned plot.
Processed observations become available in the web application for analysis or export into forest-management software. Gaia supports integrations with NCS, FSVeg and FVS and works with consulting foresters, private land managers and public agencies on inventory and volume-determination projects. Its carbon-project work uses the same collection and analysis workflow to support measurement, reporting and verification.

The project ran from May 2023 through April 2024 under award 2234077. Peter McHale served as principal investigator and Carnegie Mellon University was the research institution. The work aimed to register below-canopy, above-canopy and satellite data streams for forest measurements.
