Atlas
About
About Atlas
Atlas is Boston Dynamics' electric industrial humanoid for material handling in manufacturing and logistics. Its joints provide a broad range of motion for lifting, carrying and reaching around existing workstations. Tactile sensing and a panoramic camera view support object handling and movement through shared industrial spaces. Atlas can navigate to a charging station and exchange its own battery, allowing work to continue without a person replacing the pack.
The platform is designed to connect with factory and warehouse systems through Orbit, including task coordination and performance monitoring. Development began with Hyundai field testing on sequencing work. Boston Dynamics is expanding applications with selected early adopters, including machine tending and order building, while broader integration and fleet expansion remain part of the rollout.

Timeline
- Boston Dynamics details Atlas GR3 hand and sim-to-real manipulation tests
2026-10-01 - Demonstration - GR3 has 13 directly actuated degrees of freedom, compared with seven on the previous GR2 hand; its opposable thumb has four and each other finger has three. Dense pressure-sensitive tactile sensors cover the fingertips and palm, complementing actuator proprioception and backdrivable joints. Initial dynamic-task policies were trained with domain randomization and transferred to hardware using high-rate actuator proprioception for feedback.

2026-09-21 - Facility Opening - RMAC operates inside Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America near Savannah, Georgia and is scheduled to move into a building about ten times larger in 2027. The training programme starts with parts logistics and sequencing, with component assembly planned from 2030. Hyundai plans 25,000 Atlas units across Hyundai and Kia plants over the coming years and a US production facility rated for 30,000 robots annually.

2026-06-29 - Market Signal - Around 10 Boston Dynamics engineers evaluated more than 10 Korean automotive-parts factories over nearly a month. Potential components included actuators, grippers, arm and leg modules, lightweight aluminium structures and lidar. Hyundai Mobis, Hwashin Precision and SOS Lab were among the manufacturers being considered for Atlas production.
Source - Atlas performs Ghost Rabona football move using reinforcement learning
2026-06-04 - Demonstration - Boston Dynamics trained Atlas to perform the previously unseen Ghost Rabona using optical motion capture of human movement and reinforcement learning. The move combines a fake step-over, crossed-leg rabona kick, takeoff and landing, and balance recovery, requiring whole-body coordination and dynamic control. Atlas learned the policy through thousands of parallel simulations on cloud GPUs before the learned skill was deployed to hardware, illustrating transfer from simulation to physical motion.

Notes
Profile notes
- Electric Atlas starts a new industrial record
reviewed 2026-07-17 - Hydraulic Atlas made Boston Dynamics famous for dynamic humanoid research, but it was never the factory product now moving toward deployment. Boston Dynamics retired that platform before introducing the all-electric Atlas for industrial work. The research legacy carried forward, while the hardware, product purpose and deployment record changed. Hyundai factory work belongs to electric Atlas; the earlier demonstrations explain where the technology came from, not how the current product is performing in industry.
