About Variable Machines

Variable Machines replaces a permanently shaped composite mould with a programmable surface formed by many independently controlled linear actuators. Each actuator measures force and position, allowing the array to reproduce a different tool geometry and support the load applied during fabrication.

A hybrid additive layer creates the smooth working surface above the actuator array, combining reconfigurability with the finish required by composite parts. The system is intended to replace separate moulds, trim fixtures and assembly tooling when manufacturers produce large parts in low volumes or revise designs frequently.
