About Vicarious Surgical

Vicarious Surgical's design places a camera and two articulated instrument arms through one abdominal entry point. The arms are intended to reproduce shoulder, elbow and wrist movements, with 28 sensors per arm. Pivoting within the abdomen is designed to let the surgeon approach tissue from different directions without arranging multiple external instrument arms around the patient.

A patient cart supports the inserted assembly, while the surgeon uses hand controllers and stereoscopic 3D imaging at a separate console. Instrument and camera control remain with the surgeon. The system is still under development and is not FDA-cleared or available for commercial sale in the United States. Current disposables require a 1.8 cm incision; the company is developing disposables targeting 1.5 cm.
